Focus On You

This month we would like to take a step back from tips on ways to improve your physical health and focus on something equally important – your mental health. June is often a hectic time for many of us with children out of school, potential travel plans, and demanding work schedules. Often we find ourselves juggling our day to day without taking a second to just relax or do something for ourselves. This constant juggle can drain our mental stamina and impact our relationships, jobs, and overall well-being.

Throughout the month of June, let’s focus on these three tips that will help us re-energize our minds and emotions:

    1. Process unhappy thoughts. One great way to purge negativity or frustration from within is to do brain dumping exercises whenever you feel stressed or anxious. It is very simple. Simply write down your deepest thoughts so that you can address them. Don’t keep these thoughts pent up inside you — it’s not healthy.
    2. Get out more often. If you have a regular 9-5 job, chances are you spend much of your time holed up in the office and not a lot of time outdoors or doing something you enjoy. During weekends you’re probably busy with house/yard work or running errands. Make a point to go out with your friends, spouse, or family at least once a week. Get some sun. Go out and embrace a change of environment. It will do wonders for your body and your soul.
    3. Learn to say no, and realize that some things can wait. Yes, you heard right.. you CAN say no and not everything has to be done RIGHT NOW. This is something I have struggled with in my own life and attempt to address daily. There may be some days where you need to take time to be by yourself or to go for a walk. The clothes in the washing machine can wait, the grass can be cut later, the feeling of obligation to say yes and please everyone is not always in your best interest.

Whew… we realize the tips provided may be a tall order, and to do them all at once may be overwhelming—but challenge yourself this month to realize the tasks and stress that pile up in our lives do not have to consume us. You, and only YOU, are in charge of your happiness. Try one a week and see what works best for you. You may be surprised the impact it will make on your happiness.
