New Year – New Habits – New You

Happy 2017, people! It’s a new year, and it’s a perfect time to break those old unprofessional habits and become a more amazing and likeable teammate! It’s no secret that we are all perfectly imperfect humans. So I thought we could all spring into the new year with some tips on how to crush those bad habits and adopt some fresh new healthy ones. Aristotle, y’all—“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

  • Up and at ‘em—They say there are 2 types of people in this world: 1) morning people 2) people who don’t like morning people. If you’re already a morning person—yay you! But I still challenge you to add a new healthy habit to your a.m. rituals. Now if you fall into the second category, listen up! Stop the snoozing, open your eyes, stretch your legs, and hit the ground running. It doesn’t matter what it is..a healthy breakfast, meditation, exercise, etc.—what matters is you have a healthy routine. How you start your day will directly affect your mood and the value of your entire day. Get in this habit so you can find yourself more punctual, more effective, and more successful.
  • If you’re not early, you’re late—I was lucky enough to begin my career working for a company that was owned and managed by military men and women. My boss told me early on that if I wasn’t 15 minutes early every day-I was late. Now I know that isn’t always feasible; but, I do know that if you consistently strive to be early every day, more often than not you’re going to be early/on time! Make it a habit. Make it happen.
  • Consistency is essential; nothing is achieved without it—Consistency is a major key to success in your work life and your professional life. People like people who are reliable and consistent in their responses and attitudes. Even on your worst day your mood shouldn’t affect how you treat others. Besides, there are few things that make you more unlikeable than being fickle and irresponsible. If you say you’re going to be at a certain place or that you’ll do a certain thing-do it—and do it with a smile!
  • You are never fully dressed without a smile—Truth! Smiling is contagious, y’all. People sub consciously mirror the body language of whoever they are communicating with. So specifically speaking to you people with the resting grumpy cat face—smile more! Make it a habit. Smile at people, and they will naturally smile back. If you make one person smile and that person makes another person smile and so on—we’d have a domino effect, and then everybody would be smiling. It’s kind of a wonderful thought, huh?

Don’t focus on perfection. It’s all about effort. Bring effort with you every single day. That’s the only way we will transform ourselves this year!
